Contextualized Word Representations for Reading Comprehension
نویسندگان
چکیده
Reading a document and extracting an answer to a question about its content has attracted substantial attention recently, where most work has focused on the interaction between the question and the document. In this work we evaluate the importance of context when the question and the document are each read on their own. We take a standard neural architecture for the task of reading comprehension, and show that by providing rich contextualized word representations from a large language model (LM), and allowing the model to choose between context dependent and context independent word representations, we can dramatically improve performance and reach state-of-the-art performance on the competitive SQUAD dataset.

Schemata-Building Role of Teaching Word History in Developing Reading Comprehension Ability
Methodologically, vocabulary instruction has faced significant ups and downs during the history of language education; sometimes integrated with the other elements of language network, other times tackled as a separate component. Among many variables supposedly affecting vocabulary achievement, the role of teaching word history, as a schemata-building strategy, in developing reading comprehensi...
متن کاملThe Effect of Online Learning Tools on L2 Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Learning
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various online techniques (word reference, media, and vocabulary games) on reading comprehension as well as vocabulary comprehension and production. For this purpose, 60 language learners were selected and divided into three groups, and each group was randomly assigned to one of the treatment conditions. In the first session of tre...
متن کاملWords or Characters? Fine-grained Gating for Reading Comprehension
Previous work combines word-level and character-level representations using concatenation or scalar weighting, which is suboptimal for high-level tasks like reading comprehension. We present a fine-grained gating mechanism to dynamically combine word-level and character-level representations based on properties of the words. We also extend the idea of fine-grained gating to modeling the interac...
متن کاملThe relationship between comprehension and oral reading in progressive fluent aphasia.
The role played by comprehension in oral reading was investigated in three patients with progressive fluent aphasia. For patients J.L. and G.C., there was evidence of a deficit in semantic memory affecting both word production and comprehension. F.M., although equally anomic, had significantly better single-word comprehension than either J.L. or G.C. It was predicted that, for J.L. and G.C., su...
متن کاملReading Comprehension: A Conceptual Framework from Word Meaning to Text Meaning
Reading comprehension is widely agreed to be not one, but many things. At the least, it is agreed to entail cognitive processes that operate on many different kinds of knowledge to achieve many different kinds of reading tasks. Emerging from the apparent complexity, however, is a central idea: Comprehension occurs as the reader builds one or more mental representations of a text message (e.g., ...
